Thoughts on The Good Heart

-A curmudgeonly bartender named Jacques (Brian Cox), while in the hospital for his fifth heart attack, meets homeless almost-suicide victim Lucas (Paul Dano), and adopts him as his protege.

-I'll say it right now: you can see the twist coming a mile away. There's so much blatant foreshadowing in the first half hour, it's inevitable.

-And yet, I stuck around, because Brian Cox and Paul Dano play their respective roles--Shakespearean-level asshole and awkward young manchild--so well, their chemistry so solid, it keeps the plot, which involves a shitload of nothing, from sagging. The script, when it's not busy sucking, is actually quite funny in the quieter, introspective moments. Like one scene, in which the classiest fart joke ever conceived.

-Beautifully dark, moody cinematography.

-This is the second movie of the year where a sweet ingenue played by Paul Dano falls victim to the sexist, loud, rude, grand-scale old man of odd job-holding. There.

Man, this movie sucked. I might have walked out if it didn't have such likable main actors. Also: one of the most underwritten female characters (or characters in general) I've ever seen. And that's saying something.

"Good heart" was the worst movie of the year according to Roger Ebert LOL! I didn't hate it, brian cox is cool, I think. But Mr Cox sure can't say no to the money, he's made a ton of movies lately.
I liked him in the indie movie Red (2008), also, he was well-picked for "25th hour".

So what was the other Paul Dano movie you're referring to?

The title is a bit much in conjunction with how the film telegraphs its ending. But it's hard to say no to a Brian Cox movie.

I don't mind a bit of predictability so long as the performances are worth watching. I like Brian Cox but I see Alex's point, the characters don't seem at all likable.
