Thoughts on Antichrist

Sunday, December 5, 2010 6:29 PM By Simon

-A therapist, He (Willem Defoe), unwisely decides to take his wife, She's (Charlotte Gainsbourg), grief counseling into his own hands after the accidental death of their toddler son. Chaos reigns, genitals mutilate, et cetera, et cetera.

-I forget if this was Oscar eligable in 2009 or 2010, but holy shit, none of the other nominees deserved it as much as Gainsbourg. Shit.

-Borders on pretentious, but never quite crosses that line. A fascinating study on grief and mental illness, and to a lesser extent, misogny.

-The cinematography, by Anthony Dod Mantle, is beautiful. Especially in the opening and closing scenes. Damn.

-And it makes you think, guys.

-Not for the risible.

I love this movie so much. And I've seen it twice, which has to be some sort of achievement.

Grrrr I haven't seen it yet! You can't be implying that Gainsbourg deserved it more than Sandra Bullock?!?!?! ;)

Antichrist is certainly one that can garner some serious thought and is sits with you far after watching it. It took me a while to wrap my head around the film, even after a second viewing, but I have my theory as to where a lot of the film's influence comes from thematically. I'd have to flesh it out to get all my ducks in a row but religion, specifically the story of Adam and Eve, plays very heavily into the characters in so many ways that it's almost hard to grasp them all. Also, the opening ten minutes of the film are simply gorgeous.

Jason: I'll be sure to draft an award for you come December.

Robert: I very well could be!

Matt-suzaka: I disagree, about religion, I think all the imagery was a sort of red herring, and the real meaning was that it was all meaningless (hence "chaos reigns"). But that's just my humble opinion.

I consider it a 2009 film. And her, Abbie Cornish and Kim Hye-ja should have at least been nominated for Oscars in that travesty of a category known as Best Actress. They could have taken Meryl, Sandra and Helen Mirren's spots.

Also, I paid 40 dollars worth of a festival ticket only to hide behind my hands in the gruesome shot. I bought the ticket off a pregnant lady.

In my opinion among the best horror films in recent times. Will review Antichrist myself on my blog at some point . I never did figure out the ending, but that's part of the appeal, I guess.

I just remember seeing the trailer and thinking "I do not have the constitution for this one"

Okinawa: Dude, yes. The trifecta of unrecognized female performances of 2009. There should be an award for terrible awarding.

Well, take comfort in knowing you probably single-handedly saved the baby.

moviesandsongs: And I will read it.

Sugary: Look at us, using big words. Watch this, and then every two hardcore scenes, watch a latter-day episode of Spongebob. Not the earlier ones. Those are creepy as shit.
