-Peter Sellers digs the counterculture, except when he doesn't.

Oh my God, so many movies! I Love You, Alice B. Toklas is intermittently funny but mostly just REALLY dated. (My dad adores it, though.)
Who says A Woman is a Woman was selling out? That's just silly. I actually recommended that to someone tonight who wanted to see movies similar to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Of course, that comparison is kind of misleading. But A Woman is a Woman is no more selling out that Breathless is. Whereas Le Mepris might be (at least if you trust the prof from my Godard class, which I don't entirely)...
And I Am Love was one of my favorites of the year. So fucking pretty! I could watch it a dozen times more. So much of everything that I love about movies.
Andreas: Yeah, I get the feeling my mom would love it (she still goes into hysterics whenever someone brings up 'It's Complicated'). I mean, I first heard of A Woman is a Woman in an article that said some rival director described the movie as Godard selling out, so, you know, I expected a relatively normal musical. As for I Am Love, I didn't particularly like the plot of the script, but the mise en scene (if I can be pretentious for a minute, which I will anyway) was so maddeningly gorgeous I ignore it all. I get the feeling that Tilda Swinton has a very limited grasp of Italian, though.
Ah, one day I'll write a better post for it.
I can't testify to the quality of Swinton's Italian, but I did read that she learned to speak it with a Russian accent, as befits her character, which is impressive enough for me. And yeah, "maddeningly gorgeous" sounds about right. THE PRAWNS!

And as someone who does know Italian, Swinton's accent was all kinds of OMFGunbelievable. She's a genius!

I haven't seen "I love you, Alice B. Toklas" despite my undying love for Sellers. Though, after your description, maybe I don't have to.
One of those posts that starts with a smirk and ends with a spit-take. Right on, your review of Funny Girl. Brevity is, indeed, the soul of wit (and the "indeed" insertion kinda kills the point).
