Thank GOD!!! I've found my movie soulmate - the one other blogger on the face of the earth who not only doesn't understand the appeal of this movie one bit, but openly questions people's rabid obsession with it. Kudos. :)
I loved Mulholland Dr.
(Spoiler below) :
The first part of the film is a dream, the part at the end is reality for N. Watts. The cowboy is David Lynch talking to the audience, or so I'm told on the web.
I think it's best to not be too literal-minded with Mulholland Dr. (and Lynch in general). It's a free-associating neo-noir, more about building an atmosphere of jealousy and paranoia both inside and outside Betty/Diane's head than about an A-B-C story with understandable plot devices or character arcs.
Also, I think it's best to avoid pseudo-authoritative "this is what I heard..." explanations for it. Just go with your own impulses about what each twist or symbol means, or what the movie is trying to say.
