I don't watch Lost...

That is, I don't normally watch it. But my Parental and my sister were watching it, and I didn't feel like doing homework, and I was out of movies, and there was nothing on TV, and I didn't feel like reading, so I sat down and watched it with them.

I've educated myself on the basic outline up until now. I know more about these characters than I care to. Now, will someone please tell me what the fuck was going on!?!

Thank you.

Yep. Not the easiest narrative to jump into.

It goes, something like this:
There's an island. That island has a light on it. That light is the light within man. If that ever goes out, ominous stuff will happen. Very ominous. So, there's a man charged to protect it. That man is Jacob.

Now, Jacob has a brother. Let's call him Smokie, because he's a Smoke Monster who used to be Jacob's brother. The fact he's now smoke is down to a pretty big screwup on Jacob's part. His bad.

He realises he can't do this forever - mostly because Smokie wants to kill him. So he puts together a motley list of "candidates" to replace him that essentially includes the whole cast. He conspires using his nigh godly powers to put them all on the plane and to make the plane crash. The plane also crashed because somebody forgot to push a button. But let's not split hairs.

So, the island becomes a kinda of a test of characters for the survivors. And there's lots of them. Along the way, the show hints at various riddles and destinies for particular characters that don't really pan out, either because an actor leaves the show or a kid grows up, or whatever.

Anyway, the castaways make a good time of it, struggling to survive and such (and occasionally torturing or killing each other). Typically they split up into smaller groups and do their things. The most important are:

Jack. A doctor on the mainland who has had a run of crap luck. He ends up the leader of the group, despite his self-doubts. He tries do do right by his people, and remains the voice of rationality for most of the run, which understandably isn't easy to reconcile with the whole "the island makes him see dead people" bit. He eventually gets off the island with a ragtag bunch of castaways, but then discovers that he actually misses the place and goes back.

Locke. In a wheelchair after his father pushed him out a window, Locke has a crap life. Then he lands on the island and can walk again. He buys into the whole mysticism thing, which puts him at odds with Jack. Along the way, he becomes a brief leader of the Others - a psychotic Jacob fanclub - and ventures out into the world to reunite the castaways out in the real world. He gets murdered for his trouble, which does get everybody back.

Jacob eventually picks Jack to succeed him, while Smokie takes Locke's form and tries to get off the island.

Along the way, a freighter full of mercenaries comes to kill them, a bunch of them get unstuck in time and there are polar bears.

That probably doesn't help none either. It's best not to try to make sense of it, but enjoy the character moments and philosophical questions on the nature of free will.

I'm still not sure whether I loved it or hated it. I'm at odds. Hmmmm.....love..hate....love...hate...damn. Just don't know. I'm a dedicated Lost fan. Watched the whole 6 years, rooted for it, watched it, wrote about it...

I feel slighted. I think the answer, for all the thoughts it provoked, was a little too easy. I think they think they are really cool, when really. I'm kind of peeved.

But Sawyer and Juliet holding each other after all that time did make me tear up... so so sweet.

I just finished watching the last episode a few minute ago. *!spoiler..ish!* The only way in which the ending was a surprise was that it was so predictable, noone ever thought they would use that ending to wrap up the story! Some nice moments in the last episode, but many questions unanswered...

...I feel so confused :| :D

Darren: Um...exactly...

Meaghan: It was rather easy, yes? I wasn't invested enough in the characters to tear up st reunions...my sister burst into shameful tears, though, so something must be there.

Roisin: Last 15 minutes were half convulated, half unbearably cliche. Also, I feel immense anger at the cheap-ass writer of this episode.
