Thoughts on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & A Scanner Darkly
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
I love this movie, okay? It's kind of obnoxious, with it's sense of superiority over everybody, in Hollywood or otherwise. But it's also whip-smart, clever, funny, and it makes the Fourth Wall it's bitch. Sure, Michelle Monoghan is annoying after awhile, but even she can keep up with the sardonic tone. Also, this is probably Val Kilmer's Pulp Fiction.
A Scanner Darkly
If Waking Life was just the experiment, this is the final product. Because, I think, rotoscope is the only way to really get into the Philip K. Dick book, or anything Phillip K. Dick (on that note, fuck you, Minority Report). This saw the shining, the resurection, and the exception to many an actor (Robert Downey Jr., expecially, was good as the rat, the skiddish, fast-talking James Barris). It includes a twist that wouldn't have worked if not for rotoscope, a sense of surrealism, you never know what's real and what's a dream.
What might your favorite Robert Downey Jr. movie be?

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang without the shadow of a doubt. I love that movie so much more than I really ought to. (Although in terms of fave RDJ movies, I have a weird fondness for The Singing Detective that comes in a close second)
I have to say "Zodiac," although "Chaplin" was easily his finest performance.
By the way, I'm tagging you in my "Seven Movie Questions" post. Get to it.
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a fine fine movie.
"A Scanner Darkly" is absolutely terrible. Way out of the director's depth. And a story-line that makes no sense, logically. The rotoscoping? Camouflage. Nope. Doesn't work.
Damn I guess I love them all, but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is probably my favorite of RDJ's films (so far, at least, since I haven't seen every single one). I quite enjoy Iron Man and Chaplin as well, and have soft spots for Chances Are, Heart and Souls, and The Singing Detective.
I liked A Scanner Darkly because I really love the look of rotoscope, but I don't think the script totally worked. Good performances though.
I too love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and find myself going back to it over and over again. I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly but it's out on Blu-ray this month so I'm planning on grabbing it on that medium and taking a look.
