Thoughts on My Neighbor Totoro

-That's an awesome poster. But why are the two girls now morphed into one (I think)?

-I kind of want the opening titles as my screensaver.

-Dubbing. Sucks.

-That said, Elle Fanning sounds kind of adorable.

-That also said, the two main girls, Satsuki and Mei, are kind of annoying, at least they sound annoying in over-the-top redubbed voices.

-I want a Totoro T-shirt or something. He is awesome.

-Lovely score.

-Overall, a cute, aimless practice in wholesome whimsy that I can actually get behind.

Before Disney got the rights to it, it was released by Troma (!) with a completely different dub track supervised by the late Carl Macek, who founded Streamline Pictures, the first company to regularly release anime to U.S. theatres. Fox released it on DVD in a pan-scan edition. Many people prefer that dub to the new one with the Fanning sisters.

Strangely, when TOTORO played in L.A. a couple years ago, Disney sent one of the old Troma prints with that original dub track!

You should never watch the Ghibli dubs. Except the "Castle in the Sky" one. That's not too bad and has an awesome new recording of the score. Subtitles rule.

Never watch dubbed if you can get the subtitled version ;)

hugely agree with Unwashed, mostly the dubs are not that great (though Howl's Moving Castle wasn't that bad) but the score in the original Japanese as well as one of the main guy character are nearly impossible to listen to in the Japanese version.

I prefer to just use subtitles than dubbing. It took me about a minute to realize that the dubbing in Time Crimes was shite.

Agree with you SugaryCynic - this one does sort of play like a fluff piece compared to the brilliant Spirited Away, but I still found it charming at least. And loved the fact that he popped up in Toy Story 3!
