Because in Hollywood, period piece plus foreign country plus pretty people equals vaguely British-sounding accents in 19th century France.

I like foreign films better on subject matters and classical pieces like this. I've never read the book. It's daunting. Sadly, I've never seen the play either. One of my good friends just saw the play, but I have no idea where he finds the money or the time to go to the shows every month.
