Am I the only one finding it difficult to buy Dennis Hopper as a stoned hippie?

Hopper is good but this movie is all Jack all the way.

What did you find difficult about it?

I think his Apocalypse Now role is more difficult to buy.

Because he's Dennis Hopper. The first thing I ever saw him in was True Romance, and I always see people by the first role I saw them in.

Apocalypse Now was pretty weird too.

But surely Dennis Hopper is often a maverick type character in most of his films.

Yes, badass maverick, not harmless hippie maverick.

I just watched a documentary called Not Quite Hollywood about Austrialian explotation films. Not exactly essential viewing but interesting nonetheless and one of the filmmakers was talking about a film that I think was called Mad Dog Morgan and how excited they were to cast Hopper because they thought they were getting some big Hollywood star but when he got there he was apperently so out of control they just wanted to get rid of him. One funny anecdote the director gives is when he tells Hopper to put his boots on and Hopper responds "Fuck boots! I'm Mad Dog Morgan." I love little stories like that.

I saw that, too, it's what first really interested me in Hopper.
